After completing her Master’s at Georgetown University, Keiana Smith-McDowell, began her career as a full time social media manager.
For those who don’t know what it entails, they may think she spends her days scrolling through Instagram and Facebook posting Memes and community engagement ploys.
While that is just a minor requirement of a social media manager, marketing is a bulk of the work done to ensure successful and satisfied clients.
“One of my greatest accomplishments thus far as a social media manager, is the international praise I received for some of my social media work. A lot of times people think either A: People who work in social media are interns and/ or B: People who work in social media are just scrolling through IG all day. And both can be true and untrue at the same time. Neither are true for me. I’m a marketer who creates and tells visual stories online using social media. Everything I do is calculated because that’s what online marketing is, and for my boss to travel to the UK and hear that our social media feeds were curated incredibly was big for me because I put a lot of time and effort into not only executing content but understanding the data that fuels the decisions I make.”
Inspired by daily life & people, Keiana, like most millennials has a thing for Mr. Carter himself, Jay-Z.
“I’m inspired by a lot of things; my niece who makes me want to do and be better, Khalana Barfield-Brown, Karen Civil, Myleik, Issa Rae (before Insecure, she’s always been dope to me) … the usuals.. but also Jay-Z. One day, I’ll really dive deep into the impact he’s had on my life,” says Smith-McDowell.
Like many millennials, being inspired daily amidst the ever-so-changing communities and political climate we live in, Keiana stays uplifted and focused by incorporating her many mantras to her daily life.
“I keep quotes everywhere but the two that play in my mind every day are “And the point of life is getting shit done and being happy” – Kanye West and “I’m tryna live it to the limit and love it a lot” – Jay Z , and a new one “Don’t let them get the best of you, just get the revenue” – Tee Grizzly… to be honest rap (good, honest rap) keeps me centered. I can hear a song, take something from it, keep it on repeat and really live in and through it.”

What’s your favorite movie(s)?
Paid In Full and Eat Pray Love – two completely different spectrums, I know! BUT I love a good hood movie / hustler story. You can’t tell me that I’m not Ace Boogie. Eat Pray Love, because it helps me feel, I like to watch it when I’m writing or when I’m feeling down and need some encouragement that love and life exist outside of the borders you confine yourself to.
