Louisa Clarke, played by Emilia Clarke, is a typical 26-year old Millennial. Newly unemployed, and moderately sheltered as a result of “life’s circumstances”. She lives at home in a small town with her family where she contributes to the household income. Upon losing her position at a local coffeeshop/bakery she takes on work as a caretaker to Will Traynor.
Will Traynor, played by Sam Claflin, is a wealthy, 32-year old businessman who at one point in his life, lived carefree and fearless. He was one of the top consultants in his firm who was left paralyzed from the neck down due to an auto accident. After once living such a grand life, Will is now dependent upon everyone for everything in his life. Louisa becomes his caretaker and what happens between the two in that time frame is truly magical.
Louisa is much like many of us in life in a sense, as she is clueless as to what is actually out there until something or someone comes along and opens your mind to it. Louisa learns to explore truly living, through Will, and Will learns that he can love and live under his current conditions.
As his caretaker, Louisa and Will fall in love, after spending time and learning much about the lives each led prior to meeting and she attempts to show him the life they could live together. Regularly plagued with pneumonia and complications from his injuries, Louisa finds out she is hired by his family for the next 6 months in order to convince Will from going through with his plan of assisted suicide.
The film raises many questions about quality of life, living out your dreams and experiencing as much in life as possible.
Unfortunately, Louisa wasn’t able to convince Will to want to continue living, and she is presented the option to be with him as he travels to his end of life plans. Upon his death, Louisa is able to reflect on the many lessons she learned from her time with Will. He taught her how to let go and put herself first, rather than behind everyone and she set out to embark on the many aspirations she had for herself.
