5 ways to Cope when times are overwhelming

Every year I go through all the stages of grief in the course of 2 months. My mother, who passed away in 2009 from colon cancer left the world a month after Mother’s day. Though she’s been gone for 6 years, the last 3-years, I have managed to cope better in order to be able to function day to day in my sadness. Here are some tips of some things you can incorporate in your grief.

1. Write out your feelings

You never know how your most raw thoughts and feelings could benefit or be a support to others. They say you never know what someone else is going through, and this could be a great time to interact with others to get out of your own head. You don’t have to necessarily share your raw thoughts with anyone, but there is truth in the therapeutic relaxation from writing. (You never know, you may be able to craft those feelings into a great book some time down the line!)

2. Explore a new hobby.

For a while, my only hobby/talent besides my ability to craft good sentences was that I could toss a flaming baton. It wasn’t until my God mother  taught me how to crochet, that I found a creative, subconsciously quiet place in my mind to escape.

3. Surround Yourself with Friends & Family

Being away from old friends and my family for the first time was pretty difficult for me. I’m used to my support system surrounding me with love, and celebratory gestures to make the occasion less morbid, but surrounding yourself with positivity in all aspects is a plus. Surround yourself with people who are positive, supportive and keep you with positive feelings and vibes at all times!

4. Travel!

Don’t be so opposed to hopping in your car and taking a mini road trip. I know some people cope through shopping, but why not spend your money on experiences and memories instead of “stuff”? Go, Go, Go!

5. Dive into some literature

Whether you’re catching up on some good long form reads, or some funny listicles on Buzzfeed, engulf yourself in some reading. The best way to escape the world is to dive into your imagination in a new world. If you need some suggestions check ’em out here!

Stay positive, and prayerful and more than anything, remember that it’s all temporary and you are strong enough to get through it. Tell me some of your coping mechanisms in the comments below!
